Mortaspis, (meaning "death-wasp"), with its yellow and black barring and striking death's-head markings, was not a wasp at all, but a bloodsucker related to mosquitoes.
They were the same size as Spinaculex and were incredibly large for mosquitoes, at around 2 inch in length (5 centimeters).
Facts[]
Like the Megalatus, the bright striking colours and patterns of Mortaspis could be a sign of Batesian mimicry (meaning it impersonates a harmful animal), which is meant to deter potential predators.
Given its mosquito heritage, Mortaspis would have largely lived in the humid swamps and riverine systems of Skull Island where they would lay their eggs in the still waters.
Trivia[]
- Like all animals from Skull Island. It is unknown what they faced during the sinking of the island. Given the multiple expeditions, there may be a chance that a few surviving populations was saved off-land to a more stable enclosure.
