Scorpio-pede (Nepapede harpagabdominus - "grappling-hook-abdomen scorpion-feet", real name meaning scropiopleura) measure 2-3 feet in length (60-91 centimeters). Despite their scorpion-like appearance, they are not arachnids but through convergent evolution, adapted to have a similar bodyplan. They are basically a mix between a scorpion and a centipede

Description[]

DSCN1884

Skull Island's centipedes were every bit as remarkable as any of the island's other inhabitants. Developing in isolation, a number of them had grown to exceptional size and sported extreme specialization in a number of biological traits. Among some species these traits were so extreme as to justify inclusion in a new family, the Skull Island neopedes.

Among the most specialized of Skull Island's neopede was the Scorpio-pede, or, nepapede harpagabdominus. Though not the largest of these strange descendants of centipedes, they were by far the most numerous. Colonies of the invertebrates thrived wherever bodies of water were bordered by sufficient crops of their favored food, algae. As larvae they were predatory swimmers. As adults they lived around the waterline, Scorpio-pedes grazed algae from logs, rocks and tree trunks with their shear-like mouthparts.

Like other neopedes of Skull Island, Scorpio-pedes had specialized legs. Their first pair had adapted to become aids for grazing, while those behind the next five walking pairs had been shed entirely.

Intensely territorial, the jumpy invertebrates would react defensively to any incursion into their immediate surroundings, arching their backs to brandish their venomous tails-another unusual trait among their kin, which usually had venomous jaws rather than tails, although the tails also take on the shape of a cobra hood. Armed with sharp, hollow tail prongs, Scorpio-pede tails could jab through thick hides to deliver a potent life-threatening venom. Large reptiles suffer only discomfort from the venom, enough to warn them away. For smaller animals-including most mammals and birds, a single jab could be a death sentence, the fast-acting venom killing within minutes. Most creatures knew better than to enter Scorpio-pede's grazing grounds.

Eggs were laid under branches or vegetation overhanging water. Hatching nymphs fell into the water, where they hunted as small, free-swimming predators, devoid of external legs. After three years the nymphs shed their skins to emerge as fully formed amphibious adults.

In the 2005 film[]

They appeared in a deleted scene of the swamp. They attacked the crew, who they did not know they've entered their grazing grounds, but the Scorpio-pedes retreated back into the water, when they sensed the Piranhadon coming their way.

In the game[]

Scorpio-pedes also appear in the video game in the Scorpions level as well as few other levels. They are larger in the game version than in the movie version, and also more terrestrial and predatory as they will feed on other animals (including the main characters if given the chance to) and are not restricted to water. They also keep their tails raised in a scorpion-pose, which is often the first thing of their presence seen, and due to the tails resembling the front of a cobra, they often get mistaken for snakes at first glance unless approached more closely or when they're completely exposed. The best way to kill them is to throw a spear at them. The player can only encounter them as Jack Driscoll and they are the least encountered enemies of the entire game (aside from the Cunaepraedator, Udusaur and Killer-eel) despite being highly common: being seen in only three levels in total.

Trivia[]

  • Through convergent evolution, Scorpio-pedes resemble a lot like the Eurypterids or Sea Scorpions.
  • Like all animals from Skull Island. It is unknown what they faced during the sinking of the island. Given the multiple expeditions, there may be a chance that a few surviving populations was saved off-land to a more stable enclosure.
