Segnix (Segnichthys incurvus, meaning "crooked slow-fish") is a fish native to skull island's waterways, similar to a barb in appearance.
Facts[]
The Segnix is easily identified due to its vivid hue of dark purple and red. It is a fat, ungainly-looking fish that, as its name implies, are poor swimmers. In theory, this makes them incredibly vulnerable to larger predators and there is a likelihood that Segnix may have formed one of the many keystone prey fishes in the rivers of Skull Island.
It is unknown why the Segnix have a reputation for being clumsy swimmers. However, a theory is that Segnix might have been one of the many ambush predators in the marine environments. Given the presence of a depressed, upward pointing mouth like those of an Anglerfish or Rockfish, there is evidence to support that it ambushes smaller prey through suction feeding. Such feeding behaviours does mean that less resources is put into its swimming abilities. However, as aforementioned, its clumsy speed does make Segnix itself a potential prey item for larger predators.
Trivia[]
- Like all animals from Skull Island. It is unknown what they faced during the sinking of the island. Given the multiple expeditions, there may be a chance that a few surviving populations was saved off-land to a more stable enclosure.
